The choir was joined by the outstanding violinist Agnese Kanniņa, as well as the talented baritone Eduards Vācietis, who earned his bachelor's degree in opera performance at the Norwegian Academy of Music under professor Barbro Marklund-Petersone. The program's central work was Edvard Grieg's "Four Psalms", a cycle for a cappella choir and baritone soloist. Grieg's cycle explored the composer's complicated relationship with religion, as well as his keen interest in death and the afterlife. The choir also performed several lullabies from composer Frank Havrøy, as well as colorful folk song arrangements for choir and violin. "The Baltic choral music tradition is well known in Latvia, but we are less aware of the music of our Scandinavian neighbors. To expand our knowledge of the wonderful choral canon of Norway, we presented this unique selection of Norwegian folk and classical music. Christopher Walsh Sinka RPK Artistic Director |
