Liturgy The Riga Project Choir performed the European premiere of American composer Benedict Sheehan's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The Riga Project Choir concluded its sixth season with two concerts in Dobele and Riga. The choir's program, "Benedict Sheehan: Liturgy", introduced Latvian audiences to Benedict Sheehan, a unique American composer and conductor who has twice been nominated for a Grammy Award. The choir was joined for these performances by baritone soloist Vitālijs Stankevičs. Sheehan's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is a concert-length work for a cappella choir. The work's recording, under the direction of the composer himself, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2022 in the category of Best Choral Performance. Sheehan, who is music director at St. Tikhon's Monastery of the Orthodox Church in America, composed this liturgy in English, drawing inspiration from various musical traditions of the Orthodox Church. The program "Benedict Sheehan: Liturgy" was produced with the support of the Local Government of Riga. |
